I am slightly obsessed with tiny homes and recently came across this one, which is actually a cleverly converted garage in Melbourne.
It is beautifully fitted out, and inspired by the handmade houses movement of the 1970s, as well as Swedish and Japanese design. It reminded me of your place Vanessa!

I really like the look of this place. Although, all the photos make it look quite big. A wide shot of the whole space would have been good, to get a sense of the size. I think utilising additional space within inner-city property is a really good idea. In the 1980s and 90s I lived in inner-city terraces in Surry Hills and Redfern that were huge. The rents were so affordable I only ever needed to share with one or two flat mates. This is in 4 bedroom terraces with big backyards! The Redfern terrace that was my home for ten years I noticed recently sold for $1.9 million! Completely beyond my price range of course. I actually think the backyard of the Redfern terrace could accommodate one and possibly two other small residences. Like the one featured here. Which I, and many people, would be more than happy to live in. And those residences could be available at much more affordable prices. What I'm advocating I guess is for inner-city property owners to be able to subdivide. The land of small terraces to be divided for even smaller dwellings. But with rules preventing developers buying up and tearing stuff down - for example, the original terrace must be retained. Even the block we live in has an enormous backyard. Could easily fit a separate dwelling out the back! This more intense use of space seems sensible, but I'm not actually sure if it wouldn't completely backfire and turn into an urban mess. It seems Alex Kennedy in this story is able to occupy the ex-garage space because it's part of the property still owned by her mum.
ReplyDeleteI like that we're occasionally dipping into design on this blog! I really liked the windows and the elevated floor in the bedroom. And did you see the ice cream doorstop in the bathroom, Sonya?
